A Day in the Life...{Not Back to School Blog Hop}

"Heart of the Matter" is hosting a "Not" Back to School Blog Hop", so I thought I would share with you a little bit of a typical home school day in our household.

First and foremost we start our day in God's Word. We sit around the kitchen table with our breakfast and I will read our devotion for the day. Currently we are reading out of the Veggie Tales devotional. The kids really enjoy this because it is at their level and are short easy to understand devotions. Some days though these devotions will not include Bible verses, so on those days we will open our Bibles and read a chapter out of Proverbs.

After we are done reading our devo, then we will have prayer time. We keep a prayer calendar where at the beginning of every month we will write down on each day a person/thing to pray for that day. This is an idea I got from the HEAV convention this year and have just loved it. This way we are not praying for the same thing/people every day. We ALWAYS pray for daddy on Mondays though.

After we finish up with breakfast we move on to chores. Here are a list of the chores each child (well except for L) are responsible for each day:
-get dressed
-make their beds
-straighten up their rooms (this includes vacuuming twice a week)
-brush teeth
-straighten up and clean one other room of the house (which is decided at the beginning of every month what room that is)
While they are doing this, mommy finishes cleaning up the kitchen and doing her daily chores.

After all chores are finished then it is my time with my sweet Wacko!! With him being the youngest of the bunch (well the youngest that can speak), I like to spend time with him first. This way he is not begging for much deserved attention for the next couple hours while I am trying to teach the other 2. He won't be constantly tugging at my shirt saying "mommy, mommy, mommy". This is something I learned from another home school mom and it has been one of the best things I have done.
We will either do worksheets, flash cards, play a game, read a book, do puzzles or just play cars like we did on this day. It is whatever he fancies for that day, because all in all preschoolers really just learn best through play right?






Next up is Math with my two oldest! This is actually one of my favorite times of the day because I LOVE math! But honestly we do it first during our day because it seems to be the subject I get the most whining from with my 6 year old. It's not that it is hard, totally opposite, it's that he thinks it's too easy for him. So when he starts to get tired, he complains complains and complains about doing it. BUT since I switched to doing it first there has been NO COMPLAINING! YAY! And now he is already done with his first book in Singapore 1A.

After Yacko and Dot have finished their Math work, we sit down for a small snack. Most days this is done around the kitchen table so we can socialize and talk to each other, but on this particular day it was just easier and fun to have snack on the couch!

Next up is History and Science. History and Science is usually studied on the couch, cuddled up together, while (as you see in the picture) L plays with her blocks, cups and books!

I just love to watch her play by herself!

Here is a picture of when we were studying about the Roman Empire Clothing for History. And who can study about the Romans and not dress their children in togas :)










After we have finished our History and Science Lessons for the day we have lunch together and talk about all we have done that morning (honestly we usually just have some silly time too!).
When lunch is over we head to the living room couch for read-alouds. This is one of our favorite times during the day. It is story time with mommy, what kid doesn't love that! Right now we are reading "My Father's Dragon".
Then it is the dreaded nap time/ rest time (well at least dreaded by the kids). Honestly, they may fuss for a moment but most days they do this willingly because they are so exhausted.
I take this time while the kids are resting to having special one on one time with my sweet L.

Once everyone wakes up from naps/resting then we finish up our day with Language Arts. And although "school" may be done after this, our learning does not stop here. A lot of the time they will play educational computer games, have PE time outside, work on puzzles, help me cook or help daddy with some household needs...which is another love of home schooling....the learning NEVER ends!

SO with all this being said, our days don't always go exactly this way and are in no way perfect. Like today, when mommy is sick, we had to just go with the flow but that was fine. We did get school finished today it just took a little longer and we had to be flexible with it....like we read our read-alouds on mommy and daddy's bed!

Another reason why home school is so great, it is so flexible and your schedule or day DOES NOT have to be like any one else's....it is what works best for you and YOUR family!!
