Deuteronomy 6:7 "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

Quiet Time with God when you have young children??

Some might say, 'not possible'. 'There's no way!'  Or 'I barely get time to myself for a minute.
This is something I have struggled with ever since I had child #3. Whether you stay at home with your children or go to work, fitting in quiet time with God can be very hard. But let's not forget that the main thing God wants of his children is to spend time with Him. He loves us and wants to hear from us and talk to us. So this should be a top priority of ours. Even Jesus, who was much busier and much more time demanded of than us, made sure he went off and had His quiet time with His Father.
So, how do we do this?  Many ideas could work but I am just going to share what has worked for me. When I only had 3 children and they all slept til 7 in the morning, I would set my alarm and get up at 6:30 am and spend some time reading and talking to God before my shower and my earlier riser, Yacko, came running into the room.
Now that I have a baby/toddler again, I never know what time I might be up or how much sleep I will get the night before. So rising early just doesn't work anymore because she is usually up with me. This week I have found something that works.  I talk to God through prayer and THANKSGIVING while I take my shower in the morning!  This is a time where I am (usually) alone and a time when the rest of my family knows not to bother me. I begin by thanking him for us all rising again to worship Him for another day. Then I move on to thanking Him for my family, each person individually.  And then thank Him for any other praising that may be happening in my life. I then move on to prayer requests. Although I really just try to make this time for thanksgiving.  It really helps start my day off right with a positive outlook.
As far as time to read His Word, this is a little more tricking, because I really can't read my Bible in the shower now can I? :)  I use the YouVersion app on my Droid (which is also on blackberries etc) so that I can take the few minutes of time I get throughout the day to read a little at a time. I also love their plans and usually always try and follow one (right now I am doing the One Year Bible Plan).  Doing the plans gives me an exact thing to read and I feel more accountable to do it.
How do you fit in your time with God to become closer to Him?

Thanks for sharing this!! I have a hard time with this one. One thing I'm trying is praying while I take Liam on a walk and reading the Bible on my Kindle when I get odd moments (since it's more compact), like riding the exercise bike during naps or while nursing. I'm still nowhere near as regular as I should/would like to be, though.

Isn't it so easy when there's just one? Balancing a Bible on a breastfeeding babe is bliss...but then the rest of the blessings arrive and - where does our time to to thank their Father in Heaven? For me, its waking up early and enforcing a nap or at least quiet time in their rooms so I can grab 30 minutes (using an alarm clock)...and my book is one I can pick up and put down not by date because then I feel guilty when I've missed, but the "oldies" I find via older women who have "been there" or that I've happened upon... when our hearts are seeking God, he will honor that and even what seems to be scraps can be so very nourishing. To every thing there is a season.
